What can I do to stop it?

What if I’m being bullied?

If you think you’re being bullied, you should speak to someone about it straight away. Tell your family or guardian, a friend, or an adult you trust. Don’t hit back, this will make it worse.

If you are being bullied at school, tell a teacher. Your school might have peer supporters or playground pals that you can tell or a worry box that you can drop a note in. If you are being bullied at a youth club or somewhere else where young people meet (e.g. a leisure centre or scout hut), tell an adult in charge. If you are being bullied when playing in the street or the park, tell the police. The only way to stop bullying is to tell someone.

What if I know someone who is getting bullied?

If you know someone who is getting bullied, you should ask them if they are ok and if they want some help. Just listening will help, so be patient and let them tell you what is happening. They may want help telling an adult. If you see someone being bullied, don’t just watch, do something about it. The safest thing to do is tell an adult you trust.

What if I’m the one doing the bullying?

If you are bullying someone else, you need to think carefully about your behaviour and put a stop to it. Are you upset or angry about something? If so, you should try and talk to someone about it. If you tell someone that you are bullying someone else, they will help you to stop and everyone will feel better then!

What else can I do to help?

Anti-bullying week (usually the end of November) is a great time to help stop bullying, but you can do this all year round just by showing people that you think bullying is wrong. By sticking together with other people who think bullying is wrong, you will be safer. If you are at school or college, you could help set up a support group or ask whether you can train to be a peer supporter or playground pal. You could ask to join your school council or the Torfaen Young People’s Forum.
